Personally, I wouldn't have minded the wakeup call - I had woken up at 4:00 (a practice which can stop any day now). I couldn't sleep so I got up.
We had tracked Santa on radar the day before (http://www.noradsanta.org/en/home.html) so we had a pretty good idea of when he would arrive at our house. Kim and I finished wrapping and put out a beer and some brownies as a thank you then went to bed around 11:00.
The day before Lucas had been a ball of energy. He was so excited to open presents. The snow forced us to alter plans so Uncle Dave and Aunt Karen came over for dinner on Christmas Eve and we exchanged gifts. We let Lucas pick through the pile and hand them out. He was so excited he literally hopped as he was doing it.
At no point did he want to cheat and open the presents early but you could tell how revved up he was. Despite it he went to bed with no problem, albeit late due to the company. Jack, for his part, didn’t show much enthusiasm – next year will be different for him. But he did like ripping open the gifts.

As I said I woke up early Christmas morning so I played on the internets a bit then tried to doze on the couch. I gave up after about ten minutes and started rearranging furniture. I wanted a better angle for the video camera as Lucas entered the room. Why? I may never watch it, but I think it’s because I have so little left over from my youth that I want to make sure he and Jack don’t end up in the same boat. Either that or I’m crazy. Probably a combination.
The boys didn't get started 'til about eight o'clock, but they had a very fruitful Christmas. Even before the actual holiday, it was a thrill every time a package was delivered. Who is it for? Who is it from? They also enjoyed getting cards, especially when addressed to them. They even got one that lit-up. They loved it and didn’t want it hung with the others, because it would be out of reach.
Jack has two favorite pastimes: Lining up cars (Chevron cars in particular) on his parent’s bed and watching out the front windows to see which of the neighbor’s cars are home. The first gift he opened was “Woody Wagon” of Chevron make so instead of digging out presents from beneath the tree he headed straight to our bedroom to play. It took a while to lure him back to the living room. When he did come back he opened a photo book Kim had put together of neighborhood cars, so he was enthralled with that for quite some time. So it took a long time to get through everything. As did his first Christmas, but at least this one didn’t involve a trip to the E.R.
Santa left the boys an easel/chalkboard which they should both enjoy. Jack will love painting on it/making a mess and Lucas needs to practice writing. He's improving but still gets upset when he doesn't make a line just so. Hopefully the erase part of dry-erase and chalk will help ease his perfectionist-induced grumpiness (fits). The boys also will have to share a large car-transporter truck, Carrie Carrier also of Chevron. Apparently gas stations are a good supply of gifts, Kim received a number of Hess trucks when she was young. In addition to the gifts to them both, Lucas announced he would share many of the toys that were given to Jack. Actually neither boy is selfish and really good about sharing. That is until one of them sees the other playing with something then all of a sudden they both need it.
Kim was thrilled with the many, many pairs of socks in her stocking. The hotdog bobblehead wasn’t as well received, though the ipod was appreciated. For my part I love my “Man Can,” as well as the audiobook “Round Ireland with a Fridge” (a great book, read it) and my Sounders flag.
It’s hard to tell what Lucas liked best, though everything pertaining to dinosaurs was a hit. I hope the compass I gave him becomes a favorite too. A couple of times in the past we have taken one with us on a dog-walk and took note of the direction as we moved. Maybe he'll become an explorer.
Originally we had planned to go to Ferndale for dinner, but that was negated by the snow. Instead we went across the street to eat with some neighbors – a first. It was very nice, they made a great pork roast and terrific gravy to which Kim added an apple pie.
